SEATTLE – World University Games Champion Julia David-Smith and Big Ten 10,000-meters Champion Evan Jenkins were both named as Big Ten Runners to Watch for the upcoming cross country campaign. Washington will start its season on Sept. 2 with a dual meet against Seattle U.
The men’s and women’s cross country squads each placed second in their new conference last year, going on to qualify for the NCAA Championships where the women finished 13th and the men finished 16th.
David-Smith was a top-10 finisher at her first Big Ten XC meet last year, earning All-Big Ten First Team honors. She went on to make her first NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 5,000-meters on the track, and then had a huge highlight this summer when she won the World University Games 5,000-meters title for Team USA in Germany. She ran a PR of 15:34.57 to win the title on July 26.
Jenkins was also an All-Big Ten First Teamer in cross country last fall, placing sixth overall. He also helped the men win their first West Regional title since 2015, finishing ninth. On the track, Jenkins became the first Dawg to win a Big Ten Outdoor Track title, as he took the 10,000-meters in a thrilling, diving finish.
