SAN FRANCISCO — Stanford cross country showed well in its season debut, placing second overall in the women’s six-kilometer as the Cardinal began its season at the 31st annual USF Invite.
Stanford, which has produced an individual or team winner in all of its previous meetings at Hellman Hollow, saw Julia Flynn place the highest among the cohort, earning second among all Stanford harriers in the women’s six-kilometer race. Flynn was followed by Riley Stewart and Hanne Thomsen who finished fifth and sixth, respectively. Maya de Brouwer and Ava Parekh were among the scoring runners for the women’s side as Stanford took second in the team category with 46 points.
On the men’s side, the Cardinal produced five scoring harriers within .1 seconds of each other as the team ran a similar race as it did a season ago. Freshman Vincent Recupero led the Cardinal peloton into the finish with Byron Grevious, Toby Chippendale, Milo Skapinsky and Quinn White following in order. The Cardinal men placed sixth overall with all runners finishing within .4 seconds of each other.
Stanford is back in action in late September, hitting the course at the Gans Creek Classic in Columbia, Mo, which is also the site of this season’s NCAA DI XC Championships. More information will be available at a later date.
