Cal’s Cross Country Teams Open 2025 Season With Third-Place Finishes
SAN FRANCISCO – For the second year in a row, a member of the California cross country team has taken the men’s title at the USF Invitational. Junior Justin Pretre led the way for the Golden Bears with a finishing time of 24:09.8 at Golden Gate Park.
Fueled by Pretre’s win, the men’s team took third place overall.
Another top-10 achievement, senior Caden Carney claimed eighth place, crossing the line at 24:53.1.Two other Cal runners placed in the top-40, with Zac Gibson finishing 38th in his Cal debut with a time of 25:28.1. Junior Alex Lodewick placed 40th.
On the women’s side, seven Bears finished in the top-40, with two Cal runners in the top 10. Junior Addie Johnson led the way in fourth place, crossing the line at 20:42.3. In seventh place, Sophie Tau finished with a time of 21:02.9. Sophomores Sarah Perkins and Sabine Kim claimed 27th and 28th place, respectively. In her collegiate debut, Lily Montilla was in 29th place with a finishing time of 22:06.6, followed by junior Anastasia Snodgrass in 38th place. The women also placed third overall.
“Both teams navigated the race well and did a wonderful job running. This was a great kickoff to the season. Justin Pretre looked very relaxed and decided to open it up in the last 800 meters. He’s on a new level and has a promising season ahead,” said head coach Bobby Lockhart.
Next up for the Bears is the Kim Duyst Twilight Invitational in Stanislauson Sept.13.
