Erriyon Knighton, a 21-year-old who rose to stardom in high school when he placed fourth in the Olympic Games, has been handed a four-year ban for an ADRV (anti-doping rule violation) according to a statement released Friday by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Knighton was notified of a positive out-of-competition test result on May 28. He tested positive for Epitrenbolone, which is a metabolite of Trenbolone, a banned substance on the World Athletics Doping Agency list.

Knighton contested the decision and claimed that the result was caused by consuming an oxtail dish contaminated with the banned substance.

The Arbitration Tribunal issued a decision that Knighton should not be dealt a ban “as he sustained his burden of proof and bore not fault or negligence in connection with the use and presence of a prohibited substance.”

World Athletics and WADA appealed that decision on Aug 8, after the USATF Championships in which Knighton finished fifth in the 200 meters final.

World Athletics and WADA pushed for the sanction, claiming that Knighton’s explanation fell short of the required proof and was statistically impossible.

After considering the scientific evidence, the CAS panel agreed that there was no proof that would support the claim that oxtail imported into the U.S. would have trenbolone residues in an amount that would trigger an Adverse Anaytical Finding, or positive test.
