David-Smith, Cosculluela Perform at Europe U23s

SEATTLE – Husky All-Americans Julia David-Smith and Sofia Cosculluela continued to hone their championship skills at the 2025 European U23 Championships, held over the past four days in Bergen, Norway. David-Smith was the fourth-place finisher in the 5,000-meters for France, and Cosculluela placed seventh in the heptathlon for her native Spain.

David-Smith, who is of French heritage along with hailing from Issaquah, Wash., continued her very busy Euro summer. Since the NCAA Outdoor 5k on June 14, David-Smith has run a 5k PR of 15:39.97 in France, then ran a 3k time of 8:59.35 in Ireland followed by a big 1,500m PR of 4:10.03 also in Ireland. Today she was in Norway to run the 5k again, and she nearly grabbed a medal, taking fourth in 16:00.62.

Cosculluela, who hails from Madrid, Spain, took on her first hep since taking sixth at NCAA Outdoors. On Saturday, Cosculluela opened with a 13.56 hurdles time, and then high jumped 5-3 3/4. She had a season-best shot put of 42-11, and ended the day running 24.53 in the 200-meters. Today, she opened in the long jump with a 19-11 3/4, then threw 133-9 in the javelin, and ran a season-best 800-meters of 2:20.07. That gave her a two-day total of 5,845 points, just 11 points off her score from NCAAs.

Cosculluela finished seventh overall in Bergen. The javelin was the only missed opportunity for her, as she had launched a big PR at NCAAs of 160-8. Had she had the same throw today, she would have just cracked the 6,000 point barrier.
