COLFAX, Wash. (Aug. 30, 2025) – In the first race of the year, sophomores Evans Kurui and Rosemary Longisa each smashed the event records at the season-opening WSU Alumni Open, Friday at the Colfax Golf Club.
Longisa won the Women’s 4-kilometer race in her first collegiate cross country race, crossing the line in 12-minutes, 54.4 seconds, 15 seconds faster than the second place finisher, Longisa’s time was 11 seconds better than the previous best at this meet. Zenah Cheptoo. Cheptoo finished in 13:09.8, well ahead of third-place finisher Caroline Jepkorir.
In the men’s 6k event, Kurui raced to an early lead and never looked back as he blazed his way to a 15-second win over second-place finisher Solomon Kipchoge. Kurui, who’s time of 16:44.3 was 12-seconds faster than the previous record in this event, marked the second-consecutive year he has shattered the event record. Kipchoge, in his first year at WSU after transferring from Texas Tech, crossed in 16:59.9, while junior Josphat Meli was third in 17:23.9.
The Cougars are next in action Friday, Sept. 12, when they return to the Colfax Golf Club to host the Cougar Classic.
