Previous Record – 6-0 ½ by Garrett P. Serviss, Jr. (Brooklyn Latin School, Brooklyn, New York) in the Bronx, New York, on June 10, 1898, the first 6-foot clearance by a high school athlete
Competing in what was at the time the Northern California high school championships, or the AAL, Henley won the long jump (20-3) and high jump, the latter by 8 ½ inches, becoming just the second high school competitor to scale 6 feet. Henley went on to compete for Stanford, scoring in both jumps for the Cardinal in the 1901 dual meet against Cal.
