Thomsen Grabs First Conference Honor – Stanford Cardinal

STANFORD, Calif. — Following a third place finish at the 7th annual Gans Creek Classic, Stanford freshman Hanne Thomsen has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Freshman and Performer of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday.
Thomsen, who began the season with a sixth-place finish at the USF Invite on August 29, improved her time from a month ago by nearly 45 seconds, blazing into a third-place finish at Gans Creek with a time of 20:15.8 to earn hardware for the Cardinal. Thomsen, who finished only 1.2 seconds behind second place on Friday, surged into the top 10 through 2,000 meters before holding strong in the top five after the 4000m mark, earning an average split of 3:23.4.
Through two meets this season, Thomsen has earned two top-10 finishes with consecutive sub-21-minute times. At the USF invite, she nabbed sixth place as one of three Cardinal to place in the top-10 in Stanford’s season opener before leading the Cardinal to a first-place team finish in the black championship bracket on Friday.
Thomsen and the Cardinal are back in action in two weeks, heading up to Madison, Wis., to take part in the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational on Friday, October 17. Stanford hits the course for the women’s “A” Championship race at 11:50 a.m. CT followed by the Stanford men at 12:30 p.m. CT.
