The University of North Carolina men’s cross country and track and field programs combined to finish 12th nationally in the 2022-23 USTFCCCA Men’s Program of the Year Standings, the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced on Thursday.
The Tar Heel men finished 10th nationally in cross country and tied for 32nd place at both the NCAA Indoor and Outroor Track & Field Championships. The combined finishes earned 77.5 points for Carolina, good for 12th place overall and second among Atlantic Coast Conference schools.
Brigham Young finished first nationally with 25.5 points, followed by Arkansas, Washington, Oklahoma State and Texas in the top five. Virginia finished 10th as the only ACC school to finish ahead of the Tar Heels.
The USTFCCCA Program of the Year Award honors the institution that has achieved the most success in each academic year (spanning the cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field seasons) based on the institution’s finish at the NCAA Championships.
In order to be eligible for the award, teams must qualify for each of the NCAA Championships. Scoring is based on the team’s finish at each NCAA Championship in cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field (i.e. 1st = 1 point, 2nd = 2 points … 31st = 31 points) with the lowest total score for all three championships combined determining the award winner. Ties among schools split points for positions taken.
