Day 7 at the 2019 IAAF World Athletics Championships was headlined by the women’s 400m final, in which Bahrain’s Salwa Eid Naser ran the third-fastest time in history, clocking 48.14s to claim gold. Shaunae Miller-Uibo claimed silver with a new area record 48.37s, with Shericka Jackson setting a new PB of 49.47s for bronze.
The heptathlon drew to a close with Katarina Johnson-Thompson emerging victorious after two days of action. The Brit claimed four PBs across the competition to move up to sixth on the all-time list and set a new national record of 6981. Reigning champions Nafi Thiam took silver, with Austrian Verena Preiner taking bronze.
The decathlon built to a crescendo as world record holder Kevin Mayer was forced to withdraw. With fewer than 50 points separating the Top 4 going into the 1500m, it was German Niklas Kaul who produced the best race, becoming the youngest ever World Champion with a score of 8691, a new PB. Silver went to Estonia’s Maicel Uibo, who also set a PB of 8604, with Canadian Damian Warner finishing with bronze.
In the women’s shot put, Gong Lijiao asserted her dominance over the competition, taking gold for a 12th win in 13 events this season. Gong has been unstoppable this season and her throw of 19.55m was enough to secure yet another title. Jamaica’s Danniel Thomas-Dodd took silver with 19.47 and Christina Schwanitz claimed bronze.
