MADISON, Wis. — Two current Badgers and four former members of the Wisconsin track and field teams, will compete at the 2023 World Athletics Championships. The nine-day competition will take place from August 19-27 at the National Athletics Centre in Budapest, Hungary.
Olympic silver medalist Mohammed Ahmed is competing the men’s 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters for Canada.
Abdullahi Hassan will also be representing Team Canada, and will compete in the 800 meters. Hassan sits third on UW’s Top-Ten list in the event with a personal best of 1 minute, 46.16 seconds.
U.S. Olympian Alicia Monson will compete in her second outdoor World Championships and is slated to race in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters. She is ranked eighth in the world in both the 5,000 and 10,000 meters. Monson broke the American record in the 5,000 meter back in July at the Diamond League in London.
In the men’s decathlon, Olympian Zach Ziemek is currently ranked eighth in the world. A two-time U.S. Olympian, Ziemek finished sixth in the decathlon at the 2020 Olympics and third at the 2022 World Championships.
Australian, Morgan McDonald, a four-time NCAA championd during his time at UW, will compete in the men’s 5,000 meters.
Rising junior Adam Spencer will also represent Australia at the meet in the 1500 meters. He holds the Wisconsin record in the event with a time of 3:31.81, which he set in July at the Diamond League in London.
