Kurui Earns His Third-Straight WCC Runner of the Week

PULLMAN, Wash. (Oct. 8, 2024) – Washington State cross country freshman Evans Kurui won West Coast Conference Cross Country Runners of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday. It is the third-consecutive competition the freshman has received the honor.

Competing in an elite field at the Joe Piane Invitational in South Bend, Ind., Kurui continued his dominant start to the season. The freshman finished second among 166 runners in the Blue Division, completing the 8k course in 22:24.7. His performance was his collegiate best at that distance and was just four seconds behind the winner. It was also nearly three seconds ahead of the third-place finisher.

In his three meets this fall, Kurui has captured two races, along with a second-place finish. He has received WCC Runner of the Week honors following all three races as well as National Runner of the Week by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) following his victory at the Cougar Classic where he set the course record.

The Cougars will return to action October 19th for the NCAA Pre-Nationals meet in Madison, Wisc.
