There has been a real resurgence of throwers in Connecticut this year and this weekend certainly put an exclamation point on their progress. As we enter the championship season over the next six weeks, the state records in the boys and girls shot put and the boys weight throw are all in play.

On Saturday, Maya Quaranta of Sacred Heart Academy tossed the shot put an incredible 45 feet and 5 inches at the Throwhawks Throws Party at Bloomfield High School. It was a 4 foot PR on her 6th and final throw of the competition. This puts the Yale commit in the top ten nationally and she moves ahead of Leah Moore as the 3rd best thrower in state history. Brittany Jones is only 3.25 inches in front of her, but the real prize will be breaking Tynisha McMillan’s state record of 46-11.75 set in 2006.

Last week’s Hoka Athlete of the Week Payton Sirdine of Bloomfield also had a great series and went over 40 feet for the first time in her career, which she did on her last two attempts. Her best of 40-3.5 gives CT three girls over the 40 feet mark this season.
At the Yale Invitational Chris Amy threw 63-3.75, which was better than Mel Taylor’s state record that stood for 53 years before Gary Moore broke it three years ago. Last year Tom Matlock also broke 63 feet to win New Englands. Now it seems like the floodgates have broken and this weekend Simsbury’s Marshall Potter also joined the club and finally broke 60 feet by three and a half inches. This is the first time CT has had three boys over that mark in a single season, indoor or outdoor. All three boys are in the top 14 nationally and Potter is now 9th all time in CT history.

Potter’s winning weight throw of 70’3.50 at the Yale Invitational made him the 2nd CT thrower over 70 feet behind Gary Moore’s state record of 73-07.75. While he didn’t improve upon his best, he won Saturday’s competition with a throw of 64’3.
Bringing all these throwers together was Bloomfield coach Damien Larkins. He has become a pied piper for throwing in the state with his Throwhawks club that attracts passionate throwers from all over the state. He is trying to build a community of like minded athletes like they do throughout the world.
