As we continue with conference championship performance this week we received almost 500 responses in balloting for the HOKA CT Indoor T&F Athletes of Week 7 sponsored by Marathon Sports for performances last week. In addition to the recognition each of the following award recipients will receive a commemorative t-shirt in appreciation of their performance.
Girls Track HOKA AoW #7 – Lauren Kropo, Naugatuck
Lauren Kropo of Naugatuck earned her second HOKA Athlete of the Week award with 205 votes in recognition of her dominating performances at the recent NVL Championships. The Naugatuck girls were led by junior Kropo who displayed her range by winning the 55m, 300m and 600m in meet record times. After the 55m trials she won the 600m by over ten seconds near her closest rival and then with only the boys 600m and the hurdles as recovery she returned to win the 55m in 7.08. She finished off her meet running her fastest time in two years, finishing in 39.79 in the 300m. Kropo now leads the state in every sprint event from 55m to 600m. She was named the NVL Outstanding Sprinter.
Girls Field HOKA AoW #7 – Vanessa Agyemang, Bloomfield
The Bloomfield girls won the CCC Championship last Saturday by scoring in 8 of 15 events. Their biggest scorer was Vanessa Agyemang who took home three gold medals and for her efforts she was recognized with 237 votes in balloting. She joined Saphyr Brown, Nacquelia Fletcher and Caleah Baker to win the 4x200m in 1:44.79. This is just a little over a second slower than their state leading time they ran at the Armory in December. In the long jump, Agyemang has been simply dominating all season and has gone over 18 feet in every meet this season with a best of 19-2. On Saturday she won as expected, reaching a distance of 18-5 to tie the meet record. She also defeated all comers in the 55m hurdles with a time of 8.46, which was only a tenth of a second off her PR.
Boys Track HOKA AoW #7 – William Liebler, Southington
The CCC Championship last Saturday highlighted Southington’s William Liebler increased prowess in CT distance events as a fierce tactician this season enabled him to reset his 1600m PR and school record finishing first in 4:25.55. His 1600m time ranks him as CT#9 in the 1600m/1m as well as a recent 9:39.37 where he is ranked as a CT #11 in the 3200m/3k. Liebler received 426 votes this week over his fellow CCC nominees.
