CIAC Class L Boys Championship

Top two teams in 2024: Windsor, Xavier, Bethel

Projected Top Boys Teams: Windsor, Xavier, Bethel, E.O. Smith, New Canaan

Events to Watch:

Shellldon Simpson Sr. is one of the greatest short sprinters to ever grace the  indoor oval in CT. A quarter of a century later, he still owns the state record for 55m and the Class L record at 6.33. Going into the season that record looked pretty secure but at SWCs on Monday Jayson Vanterpool of Bunnell surprised state leader Luke Richardson of Bethel to take over the state lead with a time of 6.34 with the Bethel senior also setting a PR but .03 seconds behind. Now the excitement is building for this race and both athletes should have a shot at the record set at the very beginning of the century. Having a front row seat in this battle should be Shelldon Simpson Jr, who is the 3rd seed and competes for Windsor.

Another great battle that could be brewing is in the 1000m. Xavier’s Owen Martin and Jack Ouellette have been tearing it up this winter in the distance events and both have already gone under 2:30 for the five lap race and Martin’s best of 2:28.51 is under John Fraser’s meet record. Since Xavier is in the hunt for the team title, it isn’t likely both will run this event, but lurking in the shadows is defending champion Soheib Dissa of Newtown who has only run this race once this season but recently ran a 4:04.80 mile at the Millrose Games last weekend. Dissa is only seeded 9th because of his seed of 2:40.27 back in December, but his best of 2:28 is only a couple of tenths behind Martin’s best this season so we could see another record go by the wayside in this event.

The finals of the 55m hurdles could be historic. Aaron Haynes and Jerome Harris co hold the Class L record at 7.52 but Windsor’s Marvin Escalera has already gone under that time at CCCs and William…
