Dores Wrap Up Island Relays Bahamas Invitational

FREEPORT, Bahamas — On the second day of the Island Relays Bahamas Invitational the Vanderbilt women’s track and field team built off its marks from day one, adding more names to Vandy’s top-10 lists and posting numerous top-3 event finishes.

In the discus, senior Veronica Fraley finished first overall with her 55.42-meter throw.

Freshman Giavonna Meeks threw 45.60 meters in the discus, which is fifth in program history. In the shot put, Meeks posted a mark of 13.88 meters, ranking fourth best in school history. This weekend Meeks competed in three events and posted just as many Vanderbilt top-10 performances.

Freshman Taylor McKinnon earned third place in the 100-meter hurdle finals with her time of 14.76 seconds. Senior Jada Sims also snagged a top-5 finish in the event with her 15.10 second race.

The 4×100-meter relay team of sophomore Ella Escobar, senior Madison Fuller, McKinnon and graduate student Taiya Shelby clocked 46.91 seconds, ranking ninth in the Vandy record books.

In the 4×800-meter relay, Vanderbilt’s A relay team of junior Joslin Blair, senior Kaira Brown, Shelby and sophomore Julia Rosenberg finished in second place with a time of 9:01.03. The Commodores’ B relay team of sophomores Emma Curry and Cameron Fawcett and juniors Lainey Phelps and Nicole Anderson finished the race in 9:20.15, claiming third place.

Friday’s action was highlighted by four athletes posting Vandy top-10 performances. Meeks’ mark of 48.67 meters in the hammer throw is third in Vanderbilt history. Freshmen Mya Georgiadis (59.61 seconds) and Allyria McBride (1:00.04) also notched top-10 times, claiming the No. 6 and No. 7 spots on the school’s 400-meter hurdle list. In the 100-meter dash, Escobar’s time of 12.22 seconds qualified her for Saturday’s event finals and ranked No. 10 in the Vanderbilt record books.

The Commodores will be back in action March 31–April 1 when they compete in the Pepsi Florida Relays Invitational in Gainesville, Florida.
