When Babe Ruth pointed to the stands in Game 3 of the 1932 World Series and then hit a home run in the exact same area, it became known as the moment Ruth “called his shot”. Just like the Great Bambino, Hillhouse junior Leonaya Knox’s Twitter post on March 12th stated that she would be the first Connecticut girl to run faster than 14-seconds in the 100m hurdles. She accomplished her goal with a final time of 13.95 on Monday at the SCC East Sectional meet at North Haven High breaking the former state record of 14.16 by Keshia Haughton and Bridget Chiaravalle.

Outside of Knox’s historic performance, there were many outstanding performances in this meet that consists of 10 teams from the 20 team conference.  The West half of the conference teams compete today. Athletes qualify from the sectional meets to compete at the SCC championships next week.

On the girls’ side, the meet came down to the wire with Sacred Heart Academy coming out on top, narrowly edging Hillhouse by a score of 153 to 148 points. The remaining 8 places were Amity (91), Guilford (72), Career (69), Law (58), Lauralton Hall (47), North Haven (26), Foran (21), and Lyman Hall (15).

The Sharks were able to score points in all 18 events on the day using their depth in the field events to help secure the win over Hillhouse. The Sharks took first through third place in the high jump, with Victoria Baker winning with a jump of 5-2, and they also swept the first four places in discus, with senior Madison Rollins winning with a throw of 108-4. SHA also had a solid day on the track as junior Juliette Forstrom took third in the 1600m and first in the 3200m. The 4x100m relay took second, while the 4×800 took third, and 4×400 took fourth. It was a true all-around team effort from the Sharks and they look to contend for the SCC title next week.

Another standout for Hillhouse was Shalisha Robertson. She has really shown her versatility this year, as she was able to win the shot put (39-0.5), triple jump (37-0), and took third in long jump (16-10). The junior is currently ranked 2nd in CT in the shot, 3rd in the triple and 4th in the long jump in these very diverse events.

In the remaining events, there were several teams who came away with gold medals. Imani Bryan of Career won the 200m and long jump, Jada McCown of Hillhouse won the 400m, Clara Gahm of Guilford scored gold in the 800m, Kelly Jones
