SEATTLE — After a very busy January at home, the Husky track and field squad starts February by venturing away from the friendly confines of the Dempsey, with a big group of sprinters, vaulters, jumpers and throwers on their way to Nebraska for the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Then a small strike force of just three mid-distance standouts will be competing on Sunday in Boston at the New Balance Grand Prix.
Washington rose to No. 6 in the USTFCCCA men’s team rankings this week, while the women climbed to No. 8. The Huskies are one of just five programs currently in the top-10 on both sides. More Dawgs will be trying to climb the individual event rankings this weekend in Nebraska at the Bob Devaney Sports Center Indoor Track starting tomorrow.
Friday at Nebraska will start with the men’s heptathlon at 10 a.m. Pacific time, which will feature UW standouts Bruno Comin Pescador and Jami Schlueter in their first multi-events of the season.
Friday will also feature both weight throws, with men’s School Record-holder Jayden White slated to make his season debut, and women’s School Record-holder Beatrice Asomaning following up her record-breaking performance from last Friday. UW will also look to have a strong showing in the men’s pole vault and long jump Friday evening.
Track events on Friday include multiple Huskies in the 400-meters, 60-meter dashes and hurdles.
Saturday at Nebraska has the majority of the running events, plus the triple jumps, high jumps, shot puts, and the invitational women’s pole vault section, featuring Huskies Sara Borton, Nastassja Campbell, and Hana and Amanda Moll.
Then on Sunday, Huskies Carley Thomas, Wilma Nielsen, and Nathan Green will all take part in the New Balance Grand Prix at the TRACK at New Balance in Boston.
Thomas, the current NCAA leader in the 800-meters coming off her record 2:00.95 time last week, and Nielsen, a First Team All-American in the 800m last year at Bradley, will both be in the 800-meters. Green, who sits at No. 5 in the NCAA right now in the mile, will race the 1,000-meters.
The women’s 800-meters is scheduled for…
