There were six gold medals on offer on Day 4 of the 2019 IAAF World Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar.
The men’s 400m hurdles was one of the most eagerly anticipated events of the Championships, not only because it featured local hero Abderrahman Samba, but also because three men were close to breaking the world record. In the end, reigning world champions Karsten Warholm of Norway retained his title, finishing ahead of Rai Benjamin in silver and Samba in bronze.
Mariya Lasitskene made it three straight World Championship golds in the women’s high jump. Lasitskene and Yaroslava Mahuchikh both cleared 2.04m, but Lasitskene’s cleaner record handed her the title. Mahuchick set a new U20 record in winning silver, and Vashti Cunningham won bronze.
There was a surprise winner in the women’s 800m as Uganda’s Halimah Nakaayi set a new national record of 1:58.04 to claim the gold, with American duo Raevyn Rogers and Ajee Wilson winning silver and bronze respectively.
World record holder Beatrice Chepkoech was imperious in the women’s 3000m steeplechase, setting a new championship record of 8:57.84 to win gold ahead of defending champion Emma Coburn and new German national record holder Gesa Krause.
The men’s 5000m also saw a defence of a world title as London 2017 champion Muktar Edris produced a superb final sprint to defeat compatriot Selemon Barega, with Canadian Mohammed Ahmed in bronze.
Daniel Stahl finished two centimetres off gold in London two years ago, but banished those demons in Doha, claiming men’s discus gold with a throw of 67.59. Silver went to Jamaica’s Fedrick Dacres, with Lukas Weisshaidinger of Austria in bronze.
