Two-time national high school coach of the year Sean Brosnan has been hired as an assistant coach for the UCLA track & field/cross country teams. Brosnan led the boys’ cross country team at Newbury Park HS to the No. 1 national ranking in each of the last three seasons.

Said UCLA Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Avery Anderson, “I’m thrilled to add Coach Brosnan to our staff. Sean is one of the best coaches in the country. His resume speaks for itself. His ability to coach and develop athletes to a national caliber is unparalleled, and I’m excited for the student-athletes in our program and for future Bruin recruits.”

Brosnan built the Newbury Park distance squads into a national powerhouse. Since his arrival in 2016, the boys’ team placed sixth at the 2018 Nike Cross Nationals (NXN) before winning the title in 2019. Additionally, Brosnan led his teams to four state titles (2018, 2019, 2021 boys; 2019 girls) and five CIF Southern Section state championships (2018, 2019, 2021 boys; 2019, 2021 girls). The 2021 boys squad set numerous records, posting the lowest team score in high school national championship history with 28 points, the lowest score in any division at the State meet with 16 points, and the only perfect score ever at the CIF Southern Section Championships. National records broken by Brosnan’s runners include individual records in boys cross country 3 miles (13:38) and 5k (14:03) and team average records for 3 miles (13:54 average) and 5k (14:14 average).
