Bears Earn Three Medals In Late Summer

Camryn Rogers, Mykolas Alekna Win Gold At Major Competitions

BERKELEY – After a fantastic first half of the summer that saw four Bears win national titles for their respective countries and peaked with Camryn Rogers and Mykolas Alekna winning silver medals in their respective events at the World Athletics Championships, several of California track & field’s top athletes continued to compete throughout the summer and closed the month of August out strong before returning to campus for the 2022-23 season.

Rogers, a Canadian national, flew to Birmingham, England, where she and Bears teammate Anna Purchase (England) represented their countries in the XXII Commonwealth Games on Aug. 4-6. In the qualifying round of the women’s hammer throw, Rogers smashed the games record with a toss of 74.68m (243-0) and followed it up with a gold medal-winning heave of 74.08m (243-0). Purchase finished seventh with a throw of 64.73m (212-4) after reaching a distance of 66.45m (218-0) in the qualifier.

For his part, Alekna joined Purchase at a separate major competition: the European Championships in Munich, where the former reigned triumphant over world champion Kristjan Čeh in the men’s discus by setting a championship record of 69.78m (228-1) for his first senior men’s gold medal.

Two Golden Bear athletes – David Foster and Amelia Flynt – represented the United States at the World U20 Championships in Cali, Colombia (Aug. 1-5). Foster acted as the third leg of the U.S. Men’s 4x100m relay squad in the preliminary round, where they posted a time of 39.78; they went on to take third place in the final, securing a bronze medal for Foster. Flynt, the reigning USATF U20 shot put champion, posted a mark of 14.41m (47-3.5) to finish 14th in the field.
