Alabama Cross Country Sweeps Lion Opener to Start the Season

FLORENCE, Ala. – The Alabama men’s and women’s cross country teams swept the Lion Opener in Florence, Ala., Thursday afternoon to open the 2022 season.

The Alabama women tallied 18 points to win the meet, led by Macy Schelp, who picked up the individual title after running a 14:07.36 over the 4,000-meter course. Will Pinson led the men to 22 points and the win after taking second in the individual race with a 15:10.09 over the 5-kilometer course.

“It’s always good to get the win, but the most important thing about this meet is that we ran a lot of rookies, getting them some important experience. Everyone in our lineup had the chance to get out there, knock the rust off, and compete, and that’s a great place for us to start. From here, we’re just going to keep building meet-by-meet so that we’re ready for the postseason when it rolls around.”

Up Next for the Crimson Tide

  • The Crimson Tide remains in the state of Alabama for its next meet, traveling to Huntsville, Ala., for the North Alabama Showcase on Friday, Sept. 16
  • Alabama’s third road meet of the season, and first to take the Tide out of state, is the Joe Piane Invitational in South Bend, Ind., on Friday, September 30
  • After a trio of road meets, Alabama hosts the Crimson Classic in Tuscaloosa, Ala., on Friday, October 14
