Cross Country Opens 2022 Season


PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers cross country will travel to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania for its season opener at the Lehigh Invitational on Friday, Sept. 2 at 5:30 p.m. It marks the first of two visits to the Goodman Campus Course as the Scarlet Knights will compete in five races leading up to the Big Ten Championship.
 
The Scarlet Knights opened the 2021 season also at the Lehigh Invitational, earning top-five team finishes. The women placed fourth overall led by Alex Carlson who earned a fifth-place individual finish, while the men placed fifth overall behind the efforts of Ryan Mitchell who took 15th.
 
Rutgers put together a solid campaign in 2021 after missing the 2020 season due to COVID. The women’s squad earned its second-best finish at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals, placing 11th overall with a pair of top-50 individual performances. Carlson was a standout for RU in her first season as she posted three top-20 finishes, including two top-five performances during the cross country season.
 
In week two, RU will travel to Ann Arbor, Michigan for the Big Ten Preview (Sept. 9) on the U-M Golf Course, site of the 2022 Big Ten Championships. The Scarlet Knights will compete at the Iona Meet of Champions (Sept. 16) the following week before breaking for a week to then return to the course at the Paul Short Run (Sept. 30) on Lehigh’s campus.
 
Penn State National (Oct. 14) will serve as a tune up for the Big Ten Championships on Oct. 28. The NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional are set for Nov. 11 in State College, Pennsylvania, followed by the NCAA Championships on Nov. 19in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
