SHEPHERD, Mich. — The Michigan State men’s and women’s cross country teams are set to open the 2022 season at the 37th annual Jeff Drenth Memorial Invitational on Friday, Sept. 2. Action begins at 11 a.m. for the women and 11:35 a.m. for the men.

The Spartans return three athletes from the women’s team who finished 16th at last year’s NCAA Cross Country Championships, while the men’s team, who finished 30th, returns five. Both teams earned spots in the USTFCCA Division I Cross Country Coaches’ Preseason Poll, with the women coming in at No. 21 and men at No. 28.

Michigan State returns sophomore Kaitlyn Hynes, who collected second-team All-Big Ten honors at the 2021 Big Ten Cross Country Championships. On the men’s side, graduate student John Petruno looks to carry the momentum from an outdoor track season that included a Second-Team All-American finish in the 1500 at the NCAA Championships.

The Spartans’ cross country teams return to action on Friday, Sept. 9 in Ann Arbor, Mich. for the Big Ten Preview.
