COLUMBUS, Ohio – Addie Engel, a junior on the Ohio State cross country team, has been selected the Big Ten Athlete of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday. Earlier this week Engel was tabbed the USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
This is the second Big Ten weekly honor for Engel, a Springfield, Ohio, native, who was also recognized in September 2021. She was an All-Big Ten and All-Great Lakes Region honoree last year and earned an individual berth into the NCAA Championships.
Engel won the Big Ten Preview meet hosted by Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich., last Friday, coming from behind to pass two Wolverine runners in the final 1K. She closed a 15.8-second gap at the 2-mile split and finished in 20:54.4, ahead of second place by less than 1.2 seconds.
The race victory was the second straight for Engel and the third of her collegiate career. She has placed in the Top 25 in the nine races she has run with her teammates, including six Top 10 finishes.
After a week off, Engel and Ohio State will travel to Minneapolis for the Roy Griak Invitational Sept. 23.
