Fay Sets School And Irish Record In Boston

BU Sharon Colyear-Danville Opener Results

SEATTLE –

Brian Fay lowered his own Washington School Record in the 5,000-meters, but also added an Irish National Record to his growing list of achievements as a group of Huskies got an early start on the indoor track season at the BU Sharon Colyear-Danville Opener in Boston. Fay was part of a blazing fast top 5k heat at the BU Track Center.

Moving right into track just a few weeks from the cross country championships, Fay continued his momentum from his 13th-place cross country All-American finish. The Dublin native was eighth overall today, and fifth among collegiates, in 13:16.77. That was nearly eight seconds faster than his previous indoor school record, and just a couple tenths of a second off Fay’s outdoor school record of 13:16.52.

That time broke the Irish indoor 5k record by a wide margin as well. Barry Keane ran a time of 13:25.96 at the same meet last year, which broke a mark of 13:28.93 by Alistair Cragg that had stood since 2003. Fay also goes to No. 10 in collegiate history.

The 5k also saw Kieran Lumb and newcomer Aidan Ryan kick off their track seasons with strong times. Lumb ran an indoor PR of 13:39.03, the new No. 4 time in school history, and Ryan, the Williams College transfer, ran a 13:49.07, just one spot off the Husky top-10 in his UW debut.

The first Husky up today was Carley Thomas, as the Pac-12 800-meter Champ crushed a 10-second mile PR of 4:36.24, going to No. 8 in school history in that event. Anna Gibson then ran her first 3k in three years, and dropped a whopping 49-seconds off her PR. Gibson ran 9:08.12, moving into the Husky top-10 list at No. 8.

A couple more new Huskies competed unattached in Boston today. Kayley DeLay ran the 5,000-meters and crossed in 16:04.58. Will Laird raced the 3k and finished in a time of 8:12.51.

Washington will host its first meet in the Dempsey this season on January 13-14 with the UW Indoor Preview.
