Jacobs Tabbed USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week

NEW ORLEANS — The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced Tuesday that Tennessee distance runner Dylan Jacobs was selected as the M-F Athletic NCAA Division I Men’s National Athlete of the Week.

The graduate student from Orland Park, Illinois, ran the second-fastest indoor 3,000-meter in collegiate history on Saturday at the 115th Millrose Games in New York City, turning in a time of 7:36.89 in an elite field of Olympians and World Championship qualifiers. His mark was just 0.47 seconds shy of the all-time collegiate standard.

Jacobs left The Armory with a school record, SEC record and his second all-time top 10 performance of the season. At the John Thomas Terrier Classic on Jan. 27, he clocked an American Collegiate record in the indoor 5k with a time of 13:11.01 that ranked third in NCAA history.

With Saturday’s result from Jacobs, Tennessee distance coach Sean Carlson has guided three athletes to all-time top 10 performances in the indoor 3k. Jacobs grabbed the No. 2 spot with his performance at Millrose, while redshirt sophomore Yaseen Abdalla ranks No. 8 on the list with his mark of 7:42.23 set in January. In Carlson’s previous stint at Notre Dame, Yared Nuguse set a collegiate record of 7:38.13 last season that holds up today as the No. 3 time in NCAA history.

Jacobs is Tennessee’s first athlete to garner National Athlete of the Week recognition since high jumper Darryl Sullivan was honored on Jan. 21, 2020, after clearing an Olympic standard height of 2.33m (7-7.75) that stands today as the No. 4 performance in collegiate indoor history.
