Alabama’s Cherisse Murray Claims Bronze on Second Day of SEC Track and Field Outdoor Championships


BATON ROUGE, La. – The Alabama track and field program secured its third medal at the Southeastern Conference Outdoor Championships behind a PR-breaking performance from Cherisse Murray in the women’s shot put. Murray recorded a 17.39-meter (57-0.75) throw on her final attempt to claim the bronze medal for the Crimson Tide.

Over on the track, both Flomena Asekol and Hillary Cheruiyot advanced to Saturday’s final in the women’s and men’s 1,500-meter run. Asekol secured her spot in the women’s final after winning the opening preliminary heat (4:21.53). Cheruiyot, meanwhile, finished second in his heat to advance on the men’s side.

The final UA student-athlete to advance out of the preliminary stage was Khaleb McRae in the men’s 400-meter run (45.26). McRae ran away in the fourth heat, finishing first well ahead of the rest of the pack to secure his spot in Saturday’s final.

Alabama finished the second day with the women in fifth place in the team standings with 23 points, while the men’s squad sits in eighth with 17 points.

Crimson Tide Top Finishes

  • Flomena Asekol advanced to the women’s 1,500-meter final after clocking a heat-winning time of 4:21.53. On the men’s side, Hillary Cheruiyot earned his qualifying spot in Saturday’s final after finishing second in his heat (3:43.13).
  • Khaleb McRae ran away in the fourth heat of the men’s 400-meter dash to win the heat (45.26) and earn an automatic qualifying spot in Saturday’s final
  • Long jumper Caelyn Harris finished eighth in the women’s event, recording a PR-breaking jump of 6.27 meters (20-7)
  • Cherisse Murray won bronze in the women’s shot put after throwing a PR-breaking mark of 17.39 meters (57-0.75) on her final throw of the event. Teammate Chelsea Igberaese also scored points for the Crimson Tide via a fifth-place finish (17.09m | 56-1).
