AUSTIN, Texas (theACC.com) – Virginia Tech’s Julia Fixsen claimed the first gold medal by an Atlantic Coast Conference student-athlete in the 2023 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships late Thursday night as she matched her career best in the women’s pole vault.
Fixsen, a junior from Shoreview, Minnesota, cleared the bar on her first attempt at 4.45 meters (14-7.25). Washington’s Nastassja Campbell matched that mark on her third attempt, but Fixsen emerged as the champion on progressions when neither competitor was able to clear 4.5 meters.
It caps a stellar 2022-23 season for Fixsen, who also took first place at last month’s ACC Outdoor Championships, placed second at the ACC Indoors in February and was a second-team NCAA Indoor All-American.
Fixsen’s success followed a Wednesday night men’s opening session in which Virginia’s Ethan Dabbs took the silver medal in the javelin throw for the second consecutive year with a toss of 79.27 meters (260-1), while Miami’s Décio Andrade placed fourth in the hammer with a throw of 73.73 meters (241-10).
One ACC record fell on the opening night as the Clemson men’s 4×400 relay team of Wanya McCoy, Aman Thornton, D’Andre Anderson and Tarees Rhoden posted a time of 2:59.78 during qualifying for the event.
Other ACC student-athletes are well positioned to make a run at podium finishes as the Championships have concluded qualifying and will now focus solely on finals competition the final two days. Fourteen men’s events finals are slated for Friday, and 15 women’s events will be decided on Saturday.
