Jacobs Tabbed USTFCCCA National Scholar Athlete of the Year

NEW ORLEANS — Tennessee was well represented in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Thursday release of academic awards, headlined by graduate student Dylan Jacobs being recognized as the 2023 Men’s Indoor National Scholar Track Athlete of the Year.

Both UT men’s and women’s squads also received All-Academic Team recognition, while a program record 22 Vols and Lady Vols received All-Academic Athlete honors for their efforts on the track and in the classroom.

Jacobs is the first Vol to ever secure National Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors from the USTFCCCA. The Orland Park, Illinois, native joined Sean Carlson‘s distance roster last fall and capped his collegiate career breaking four school records, establishing a pair of top-5 times in collegiate history, winning three SEC titles and claiming Tennessee’s first indoor 5k national title in 2023. His marks of 7:36.89 and 13:11.01 in the indoor 3k and 5k established SEC records and rank No. 2 and 3 all-time, respectively.

The distance standout earned his undergraduate degree from Notre Dame in Business Analytics and is currently pursuing his master’s degree in Management and Human Resources. Jacobs recently announced his decision to turn pro and signed with On Running, and he will continue to train in Knoxville under Carlson’s guidance.

For All-Academic Team honors, the cumulative GPA for all student-athletes on the institution’s NCAA Squad List for indoor and outdoor track & field must be 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale. The Lady Vols achieved a 3.44 team GPA, while the Vols posted a mark of 3.26, the highest men’s team GPA in recorded history.

Tennessee’s record 22 All-Academic Athletes each maintained at least a cumulative GPA of 3.25 on a 4.0 scale. Athletic award criteria for the indoor season included ranking top 96 nationally in any championship individual event or in the top 48 in any championship relay event, while the outdoor athletic requirement was to rank top 48 on the NCAA East Region Qualifying List.
