Five Things to Know: UW opens the season at home


MADISON, Wis. – The No. 18 Wisconsin women’s cross country team begins its 2023 season by hosting the Badger Classic on Saturday at the Zimmer Cross Country Championship Course. Racing begins at 10:30 a.m. with the men’s 8K, while the women will compete at 11 a.m. in a 5K race at the site of this year’s Big Ten Championship and NCAA Great Lake Regional meet.

Admission is free for the meet, but there will be no spectator parking on site. Parking is not allowed on County Highway PD or County Highway M near the Zimmer Course. Any vehicles violating this will be subject to ticket and tow at the owner’s expense. Spectator parking will be located at Sugar Creek Elementary School in Verona. Spectator shuttles, which are free this season, are available for transportation to the course. One accessible shuttle will be available. The shuttle service begins at 9 a.m. and concludes one hour after the final race has finished.

BADGERS ARE BACK: The Badgers are ready for action as Saturday’s race will be the first of six races Wisconsin is set to compete in this season, including the eagerly anticipated Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational presented by Under Armour on Oct. 14. On Saturday, Wisconsin will be joined by Iowa, Ohio State, Northwestern, Minnesota, Michigan, Illinois, Rutgers and Marquette

UW will also host post-season racing, starting on Oct. 27 with the 2023 Big Ten Championship followed by the 2023 NCAA Great Lakes Regional on Nov. 10.

2. A LOOK BACK: The Badgers finished on a high note last season, taking third at the Big Ten Championships and fifth at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional. UW concluded the 2022 campaign with a 19th-place finish at the NCAA Championship.

3. IN THE RANKS: UW opened the season in the fourth spot in the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Great Lakes Regional rankings and an 18th-place ranking in the USTFCCCA National Coaches’ Poll. UW ranks third among Big Ten Conference teams in the national poll.



4. MARK YOUR CALENDARS:
The Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational, presented by Under Armour, is set to take place on Friday, Oct. 13. The women’s race will feature 33 different schools, including 19 that ranked in the top-25 of last year’s NCAA Championships.
