Track and football training often go hand in hand. Xavier’s Stylz Mitchell, who earned Class MM/M All State this fall, is displaying his speed in an early season SCC Developmental #1 meet at Floyd LIttle Athletic Center in New Haven. He won the 55m in a state leading time of 6.50 on Wednesday night. The senior, who recently committed to Central CT to play football, is the top returner from last year’s State Open and is on his way to living up to expectations.

Lyman Hall is looking like they might be able to put together some very solid relays this winter behind the efforts of the Conklin brothers, Thomas and Timothy. The pair took 1st and 3rd at the Developmental meet, with Thomas taking over the state leader with a time of 1:24.27 and Timothy three seconds behind. The pair were part of the Trojans 1600m Sprint Medley last spring that ran 3:31.19, the 10th fastest time in CT history.

It seems like every year no matter how many great runners that graduate, there is always another group waiting in the wings to step up and continue the tradition of CT distance running. Sophomore Luke Cushing of Amity, who broke into the top ten at the cross country State Open,  now has the state’s fastest time of 9:29.96 in the 3200.

On the girls side, there was an incredible early season 3200m to kick off the girl’s evening at Hillhouse on Thursday. Branford’s Lucy Moran, who played soccer this fall, was opposed by four girls who qualified for New Englands in cross country. Moran won in a PR of 11:12.66, right in front of All New England runner Alexa Cicconeof Chesire who was 2nd in 11:14.36. Sacred Heart Academy’s Juliette Forstrom followed in 11:18.15 with State Open and New England defending champion Hannah Andrejczyk of Shelton ten seconds back in 11:28.94 as Hand’s Annecy Vlieks finished a second behind in 11:29.72.
