Spencer, Byrne and Astrauskas earn USTFCCCA Great Lakes Regional Awards

MADISON, Wis — Wisconsin men’s track and field standout Adam Spencer and coaches Mick Byrne and David Astrauskas earned USTFCCCA regional honors Thursday for their successful campaigns in the Great Lakes Region.

Spencer, a junior, was named the USTFCCCA Great Lakes Region Athlete of the Year. He finished runner-up in the mile at the 2024 NCAA Indoor Championships. The Melbourne, Australia native also defended his Big Ten Championship in the mile earlier this season. Spencer was the top collegiate finisher in the mile at February’s coveted Millrose Games, breaking the school record in the event at 3:52.70. It is his second regional honor after earning Great Lakes All-Region during the 2023 cross country season.

Byrne picked up Indoor Great Lakes Men’s Coach of the Year for the third time in his career and the second-straight year. The Badgers finished 14th at the NCAAs and won their second-straight Big Ten indoor crown. The Badgers had 12 All-Big Ten performers and eight first-team All-Americans in Boston, including Spencer. Byrne also was honored this past fall as the Great Lakes Region Men’s Coach of the Year for men’s cross country.

UW’s throws coach for the last 15 years, Astrauskas was honored as the Great Lakes Men’s Assistant Coach of the Year for the third time in his career and first since 2015. UW was the only school with two entries in the men’s shot put at NCAA Indoors and were led by Jason Swarens, who finished fourth. Thanks to Astrauskas’ coaching, the Badgers scored 18 points in the men’s throws at Big Tens while leading UW to its second-straight indoor title and UW posted the best event squad ranking in the region in both the shot put and weight throw.
