As the leading collegian in the event this year, Rowan Hamilton will be the favorite to win the NCAA men’s hammer title.
Star Hammer Thrower Is NCAA’s Best Heading Into Regionals
After a tremendous outdoor campaign that saw him shatter two meet records and the California track & field men’s hammer record, Rowan Hamilton was named the 2024 Pac-12 Men’s Field Athlete of the Year on Friday.
Hamilton, a three-time NAIA champion who transferred to Cal this year from British Columbia, won Cal’s first conference title in the men’s hammer since 1919 at the Pac-12 Championships last weekend. He earned Pac-12 Men’s Field Athlete of the Week honors twice, once after taking this year’s collegiate lead with a mark of 77.16m (253-2) – the eighth best by a collegian all time – and again after breaking the Big Meet record on April 30.
The native of Chilliwack, Canada, has gone undefeated in the hammer throw this year against both collegians and professionals alike. He is just the second Pac-12 Men’s Field Athlete of the Year in program history, joining teammate Mykolas Alekna (2022) as recipients of the honor.
“Rowan’s progress throughout this year has been remarkable,” said assistant coach Mohamad Saatara, who leads the throws unit. “He has proceeded with an outstanding level of work and development, and this is now showing great dividends as we move to the Championships.”
Cal will compete at the NCAA West Region Preliminary on May 22-25 in Fayetteville, Arkansas, with Hamilton and the rest of the men’s hammer throwers set to appear that Wednesday (May 22) at 8 a.m. PT.
