RESULTS

The CIAC State Open State Open Track and Field Championships concluded Tuesday at Willowbrook Park in New Britain with the final gold medals awarded in the boys’ 3k steeplechase, heptathlon and decathlon after competition on Monday in the boys and girls hammer throws and girls’ 2k steeplechase championships.

Girls’ 2k Steeplechase Championship

On Monday, the CIAC’s 2k steeplechase championship was won by sophomore Katie McMorrow of New Fairfield in a school record time of 7:14.37. Her personal record time also moved her into the 10th spot on the CT all time list. Juniors Stephanie Burzynski (Somers) and Sophie Spellman (Fairfield Ward) finished close behind in 7:17.82 and 7:21.39. The remaining medalists included Cheshire’s Mia Ventos (7:22.64), Guilford’s Clara Graham (7:30.52) and Anglelika Kotula of Sheehan in 7:30.58.

Boys’ Hammer Throw Championship

The hammer throw championships were also contested on Monday at Willowbrook Park as junior Lucas DeCrescenzo of Lyman Hall tossed a PR of 185-00 on his second attempt to establish an early lead. On his second toss of the afternoon, senior Greyson Golda of Bethel unleashed his PR of almost 2 feet as the hammer landed at 179-03 for a silver medal. Glastonbury’s Tye Karpicky earned the bronze medal with his toss of 177-0 followed by Simsbury’s Marshall Potter at 172-07 as a pair of Bloomfield throwers earned the remaining medals with Khile Francis (PR 172-04) and Mason Gray (167-01).

Girls’ Hammer Throw Championship

The girls hammer throw title was earned on a second attempt as well by Coventry’s Anaka Eaton with her PR toss of 131-10 that bettered her bronze medal throw last year by almost 2 feet. Maya Quaranta of Sacred Heart Academy only recorded 2 legal throws as her toss of 130-02 earned her a silver medal ahead of bronze medalist Lourdes Lawson of Suffield with her mark of 116-05. The remaining medalists included Bloomfield’s Kimbrae Miller (114-03 PR), Berlin’s Madelyn Lazzara (107-06 PR) and Natalie Chesnes of Bacon Academy with her PR toss of 101-08.

Boys’ 3k Steeplechase Championship
