EUGENE, Ore. – Washington’s trio of recent NCAA Champions all advanced into the U.S. Olympic Trials semifinal round today, successfully navigating the first round of the 1,500-meters at Hayward Field. The Olympic Trials kicked off today in Eugene and will continue through June 30.
Joe Waskom, coming off his second NCAA title in the 1,500-meters earlier this month on the same track, stayed up near the front of his first round heat throughout and was never in much jeopardy as he crossed in sixth-place (top-seven auto advancing) in 3:37.84.
In the third and final heat, there were four men coached by Husky Men’s Head Coach Andy Powell. Luke Houser, who just signed his pro contract with the Brooks Beasts, made an impressive pro debut as he ran a career-best time of 3:35.24 to take second overall. Right behind him was rising senior Nathan Green, who was fourth in 3:35.71.
Sam Prakel, former UW volunteer coach and coached by Powell, was third in that heat in 3:35.37. Sam Ellis, a 2023 grad, faded over the final half lap and finished 11th in 3:43.45 and would not move on.
The three Dawgs plus Prakel will all run again tomorrow in the semifinals, at 6:56 p.m. to try and earn spots in the final.
NCAA runner-up Chandler Ault had a tough day in the javelin qualifying. He threw 225-9, then 228-0, and 228-5 on his three attempts, but that was short of the recent tear he had been on through the collegiate season, and not enough to make the top-12 today. He finished 14th overall.
Jacob Englar, the 2023 NCAA bronze medalist in the pole vault, cleared the opening height in the qualifying round but couldn’t progress from there. He finished in a tie for 22nd overall at 17-8 ½.
Capping things off was Evan Jenkins, racing at the Olympic Trials to cap off only his redshirt freshman season. Jenkins placed 22nd overall tonight in a time of 30:33.47.
Along with the men’s 1,500m semi, Prestin Artis will compete in the long jump qualifying on Saturday, starting at 4:45 p.m.
