Bears Release First Slate As ACC Members
BERKELEY – California men’s and women’s cross country will compete in six meets this fall during its inaugural season as members of the Atlantic Coast Conference.
The Golden Bears will once again open the fall campaign locally at the USF Invitational in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park on Aug. 30. Both the men’s and women’s squads placed at last year’s invite, with the men taking second-place and the women clinching third. Two men – rising junior Caden Carney and returning senior Garrett MacQuiddy – notched top-8 finishes.
Cal will then head to the distinguished Roy Griak Invitational, hosted by Minnesota on Sept. 20. This will be the Bears’ first appearance at the nationally-regarded event since 2015 when two-time All-American Bethan Knights won the women’s 6,000-meter race as a sophomore.
On Oct. 11, Cal will make an appearance at the Oregon-hosted Bill Dellinger Invitational for the third-consecutive year. Last year, the men’s squad finished fifth, beating nationally ranked opponents and placing rising senior Carrick Denker in the top 10, while the women’s side collected two top-30 finishes by rising sophomore Amelia Wardle-Stacey and recently graduated Claire Yerby. The Bears will return to Northern California for the Bronco Invitational just one week later on Oct. 19 to round out the regular season.
Cal’s first appearance at the ACC Championships will be on Nov. 1 in Raleigh, North Carolina before heading to Pullman, Washington for the NCAA West Regionals on Nov. 15. Teams and individuals who qualify will compete at the NCAA National Championships in Madison, Wisconsin On Nov. 23.
