EUGENE, Ore. – Five Husky alumni moved through round one into the semifinals at the U.S. Olympic Trials, as action resumed at Hayward Field after two days off. 2024 grad Jonathan Birchman, 2023 grads Sam Ellis, Cass Elliott, and Anna Gibson, and 2016 grad Eleanor Fulton all kept their dreams alive.
The one former Husky competing in a final tonight was Kayley DeLay in the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase. DeLay, fourth in UW history in the event, ran a season-best time of 9:29.07 to finish 12th overall in a very fast race that saw nine women run under the Olympic Standard.
First up today was the men’s 800-meters. Cass Elliott, who specialized more in the 400m hurdles during his Husky career, has turned his attention to the 800-meters this year as a pro, and he moved into the semifinal round with a time of 1:47.41. Sam Ellis, the 2023 Pac-12 800-meter champion, ran 1:46.65 to advance.
In the women’s 1,500-meters, rising junior Chloe Foerster placed 11th in her first round heat in a time of 4:17.73 and would not move on. But in the next heat, Gibson earned the final auto-qualifying spot in her section with a time of 4:10.73. Then Fulton helped push the pace in heat three which wound up being the fastest of the three, and she got a time qualifier after placing eighth in 4:07.41.
Jonathan Birchman, still sporting his UW singlet in his Trials debut, ran an impressive first round race to take third in his heat in 50.68 to move on.
