COLUMBIA, Mo. – University of Missouri track and field’s Mitch Weber set a new school record in the discus at 63.23 (207-5) and advanced to the finals in the event Thursday at the United States Olympic Trials in Eugene, Oregon.
Weber broke Ben Plucknett’s top mark of 61.52m (201-10) set at the USA Championships on May 29, 1979. Until Thursday, it was the oldest program record held at over 44 years years old.
Weber placed fifth in the qualifying round overall and was first among collegiate competitors. In addition, he was one of just two college athletes to make the finals in the event.
On the women’s side, Mizzou alum Kaia Harris placed ninth in the discus with a throw of 57.62m (189-0).
