EUGENE, Ore. – Former Rutgers track and field athlete Rudy Winkler advanced to his third Olympic Games in the hammer throw with his performance at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials Sunday. The All-American and Big Ten Champion enters the Paris Olympics with a top-10 ranked distance in world.
Winkler finished second to earn Silver at Olympic Trails, recording a throw of 78.89m (258′ 10″).
He was one of three Scarlet Knights at the trials as Chloe Timberg capped off a historic season finishing sixth in the pole vault finals. The National Champion recorded a height of 4.63m (15′ 2.25″).
Jameson Woodell represented Rutgers on the track as he advanced to the semi-finals of the 400-meter hurdles after running a first round qualifying time of 50.90.
Winkler, the American record holder in the event, will join Team USA in Paris when the Opening Ceremony takes place on Friday, July 26 with the hammer throw competition beginning on Friday, Aug. 2.
