Jamie MacKinnon warmed up for the Scottish Champs next month with victory in the top 1500m race at the GAA Miler Meet.

The Cambuslang Harriers athlete has been a regular on the Grangemouth podium at the Seniors in recent years and only a trip close to the finish line last year cost him the chance of gold as Ben Potrykus took advantage.

But on Friday night he pulled ahead and away from the challenge of Aberdeen’s Adam Brown with 200m remaining at Crownpoint to clock 3:49.68.

Brown was home in 3:50.50 as the Moorfoot Runners athlete, Kieran Fulton, took third in 3:50.58.

East Kibride AC’s Angus Wilkinson had a strong run for a PB of 3:52.90 to strengthen his place at seventh in the all-time rankings at U17.

Once again it was an eagerly-awaited meet put together by the GAA – with superb support by our scottishathletics Officials.

There were around 250 names on start-lists to make it the most popular of these meets this year and a high turnout rate helped enhance the experience.

The top three Women’s 1500m times all came in the same race just after 9pm.

Beth Ansell of Edinburgh AC pushed clear of Hannah Cameron of Aberdeen AAC – with Beth at 4:18.09 and Scotland international Hannah at 4:20.01. Both were PB runs.

Third woman in that race was Jill Cherry with a sub 4:25 run for the Birmingham 2022 4x400m relay bronze medallist as she clocked 4:23.62.

Garscube Harriers athlete Finlay Ross-Davie won the top Men’s 5000m race with a strong run.

Finlay clocked 14:15.69 as he pulled clear of Morpeth’s Finn Brodie on the final lap of an absorbing race – although it tranpired he was the closest all evening to the GAA prize pot. Finlay missed out by that 0.69 seconds!

Brodie clocked 14:17.72 and those two were well clear as Lewis Hannigan of Kilbarchan AAC took third in 14:25.21.

The best Women’s 5000m times came early in the evening when the conditions were slightly less windy than a couple of hours later.

Natasha Phillips of Dundee Hawkhill Harriers clocked 16:34.08 and was followed home by Kirsty Walker of Edinburgh AC at 16:44.25.

All ages and stages were represented and there was a wide range of club vests, shot, including those from as far afield as Stornoway RAC, Inverness Harriers and Ross County AC.

Good to see Para athlete Sam Fernando (Fife AC) win over 5000m in 15:36.74 and…
