Leeds won by almost a minute from Hallamshire, with Morpeth a minute further back in third.

It had been Morpeth’s Finn Brodie who had taken the first 5.6km double lap with a 16:17 clocking ahead of Derby’s David Bishop, before long time servant Carl Avery extended the advantage with a 16:13 clocking.

Late in the race, Andrew Heyes had closed up for Hallamshire after Phil Sesemann, fully recovered from his Paris marathon effort, had given Leeds a big mid-race lead with a race second fastest 16:01.

Hallamshire could not sustain that momentum and they lost ground but still had plenty in hand over Morpeth, who fell back but wound up a comfortable third after Ellis Hetherington passed Derby on the last leg.

This was only after Ben Connor, the English National runner-up from the previous week, had run a blinder for Derby, with the day’s fastest effort of 15:37, mid-race, before they continued their see-saw up and down.
