Coats Places 14th To Lead Terps At 50th Annual Paul Short Invitational

BETHLEHEM, PA – Coming off a two-week break, the Maryland women’s cross country team turned in a strong performance at the 50th Annual Paul Short Invitational – one of the top annual cross country meets of the season nationally.

The Terps were led by Rose Coats who placed 14th overall among 371 total runners who crossed the finish line. As a team, Maryland finished 28th among 42 overall teams in the Women’s Gold 6K race which featured some of the top programs in the country.

Coats, who also placed 14th at the Penn State Spiked Shoe Invitational, was two seconds off her personal-best 6K time with a mark of 20 minutes, 24.2 seconds as the top Terp to cross the finish line.

Katie Turk placed 87th (21.17.8) followed by Katie Altieri (22:00.5) who finished 183rd. The top five was rounded out by Emma Lorey (272, 22:46.9) and Rubie Goffena (276, 22:50.3).

Earlier in the morning Gauri Nair led Maryland in the Women’s Open 6K as she placed 45th among 488 runners with a time of 22:40.6 – her second fastest time of the season. She was followed by AnnaMarie Tretola (80, 23:05.5) and Cayden Justice (117, 23:28.3).

Harvard, ranked fourth in the Northeast Regional Rankings, won the overall team title followed by Connecticut and Princeton (4th in the Mid-Atlantic Region).

Coach Valmon’s Thoughts:

Rose Coats led the way today with a gutsy race taking charge to put herself in the front of the pack from the start. This is a good stepping stone at the halfway point in the season.”
