Both Teams Take 9th Place At Bill Dellinger Invitational
SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – The California men’s and women’s cross country teams continued their fall campaign Friday morning at the Bill Dellinger Invitational, where both finished in ninth place. A total of 13 Golden Bear runners claimed season bests or personal records, with four placing in the top 40.
For the third straight meet, graduate students Carrick Denker and Garrett MacQuiddy were the Cal men’s top finishers, both breaking season bests in the 8,000-meter race. Denker finished in 18th place with a time of 23:34.6, followed by MacQuiddy in 31st place at 23:48.1. Junior Caden Carney posted a season best, coming in with a time of 24:25.5 in front of sophomore Justin Petre, who earned another season best in 24:28.4. Transfer junior Antoine Moret broke his personal record at 24:28.4 and junior Rowan Fitzgerald added a season best of 25:02.8 to round out the Bears’ top efforts.
On the women’s side, sophomore Addie Johnson was Cal’s top finisher for the second time this season in addition to breaking her personal best in the 6,000-meter race. She claimed 20th place overall with a time of 20:38.4. Rounding out Cal’s top-40 finishers was Sophie Tau in 39th place with a personal best of 20:59.6.
Other personal or season bests from the Cal women included freshman Sabine Kim (21:41.9, PR), Sarah Perkins (21:46.4, PR), Georgia McCorkle (22:13.6, season best) and fellow freshmen Natalie Wang (22:32.8, PR) and Ava Kopec (22:43.8, PR), the latter two of which were competing in just their second collegiate races.
“I was impressed with Carrick Denker and Addie Johnson’s top 20 finishes in a highly competitive field,” Cal head coach Bobby Lockhart said. “These two have put together a nice season to this point. I expect they will look better as we enter the championship portion of the season.”
Next up for the Bears is the Bronco Invitational in Santa Clara on Oct.19.
