TCS NY City Marathon

 

1990—The race was dedicated to race director and NYRR president Fred Lebow battling brain cancer.

Poland’s Wanda Panfil (2:30:45) held off runner-up American Kim Jones (2:30:50) by just five seconds in the closest women’s finish to date. Attempting to attain a 10th New York City Marathon victory after two years of injuries, Norway’s Grete Waitz (2:34:34) finished fourth and soon announced her retirement. 1988 U.S. Olympian Nancy Ditz finished 8th in 2:37:15.

The men’s race winner was Kenya’s Douglas Wakiihuri (2:12:39), the 1987 World Champion and 1988 Olympic silver medalist. 4th was Tanzania’s Juma Ikangaa (2:14:32), the defending champion.

Runners had to deal with temperatures in the 70s.

2001—The event took on added significance this year, with the city still reeling in the aftermath 9/11.

Ethiopia’s Tesfaye Jifar (2:07:43) and Kenya’s Margaret Okayo (2:24:21) were winners.

Deena Kastor finished 7th in 2:26:58 to take the U.S. title.

The race had a significant course change, with runners entering Central Park at 90th Street instead of 102nd Street, eliminating a short but steep hill.
