EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State Athletics and PNC Bank are partnering to recognize the PNC Achievers Student-Athletes of the Month. Throughout the 2024-25 season, deserving Spartan student-athletes will be recognized for displaying well-rounded achievement through leadership in the classroom, in the community, and in competition.
The first honorees for the 2024-25 season are Cookie Baugh (cross country) and Nathan Carter (football).
Baugh is a junior on the women’s cross country team and is set to earn Academic All-Big Ten honors for the second year in a row. She is very active in the community, including volunteering her time at the Lansing Learning Hub Lunch & Learn Panel, Teams for Toys wrapping party, Student-Athlete Food Drive, MSU Madness, Spartan Sunday and the Elementary School Crazy Fun Run. She is also the co-leader of the Student-Athlete Kindness Committee.
“Cookie always puts in extra effort to contribute to both campus life and the community,” said Brianne Wojciakowski, Assistant Director of Student-Athlete Development. “She’s actively involved in various student groups and volunteer activities, demonstrating her commitment to leadership. Her enthusiasm for spreading positivity also led her to co-lead the Student-Athlete Kindness Committee.”
Carter is in his second season at MSU after transferring to Michigan State in January 2023. After leading the Spartans in rushing last season with a career-high 798 yards, Carter is second on the team this fall with 418 yards and three touchdowns through the first nine games. He has started all 21 games he has played in for the Green and White and was voted a co-captain by his teammates in August.
In the classroom, Carter is on track to earn Academic All-Big Ten honors as a human development and family studies major. He has also volunteered his time at the Ronald McDonald House and Sparrow Hospital. A native of Rochester, New York, Carter was Michigan State’s nominee for the Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year, the Wuerffel Trophy and the AFCA Good Works Team.
“Nathan is an excellent example of how one can excel as a student and an athlete,” said Mandy Chandler, Director of Academic Services/Head Football Academic Coordinator. “His ability to balance academics, athletics and community involvement should be commended.
