New Delhi will welcome the world’s best para-athletes next year, as India holds the championships for the first time
The 2025 World Para Athletics Championships will take place in New Delhi.
The Indian capital will welcome the world’s best para-athletes to the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, which was the host venue for the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
This comes after the Paralympic Committee of India formalised an agreement with World Para Athletics to bring the event to the country.
According to The Times of India, the championships are set to cost between £40-50m, with the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium receiving significant upgrades, including the installation of a new synthetic track that meets international standards.
There is no official date for the championships yet but it’s most likely to take place in November.
“This will be the biggest sporting event in India for para athletes,” a PCI official told The Times of India. “It will be huge for them. More than 1000 para athletes around the world will come here to showcase their talent. Last year, we hosted the Para Shooting World Cup in New Delhi and it was a huge success.”
The first ever World Para Athletics Championships took place in 1994 in Germany.
World Para Athletics also announced Dubai, Cali, Tunis and Olomouc as the first confirmed Grand Prix of the 2025 season.
The United Arab Emirates will once again host the opening event of the Grand Prix calendar from February 10-13.
The Colombian and Tunisian meets will take place on May 16-19 and June 16-18 respectively, before the Czech city of Olomouc will hold the first-ever women’s only Grand Prix from July 3-5.
