British Athletics team announcement
Peter Molloy’s reward for a superb run in the Liverpool mud bath as a path to Turkey for the Euro Cross.
British Athletics have named their team for the races in Antalya on Sunday 8 December.
And the Scot who finished third in the Men’s U23 race in awful conditions at Sefton Park will win a first GB and NI vest in cross country after previously winning representative honours in orienteering.
It is a special moment for the Central AC athlete from Linlithgow who had targeted Turkey for a number of months.
Joining Peter in action at the Euro Cross will be fellow Scot Hannah Anderson, who has been picked for her mother’s homeland Finland, as well as Glasgow-based Shettleston Harrier Taha Ghafari, who will race for the Refugee Team.
Mother’s pride: Hannah will race for Finland
‘I picked my way through on Saturday and I thought I was in fourth when we turned into the long finishing straight – but I was actually fifth,’ he said, with only the top four guaranteed selection.
‘Thankfully I gave everything on that uphill to get into third and held on for the finish line. It was the race of my life in terms of cross country.
‘To get selected for the Euro Cross is unbelievably exciting. It is massive for me and I was looking to Liverpool and trial for a number of months. The field is so strong in British races like Liverpool.’
Peter’s sister, Grace, had represented Scotland in the past in cross country and he has had significant success with British Orienteering.
Team Leader Sarah Benson said: ‘The trial in Liverpool showcased the strength and depth of cross country running in the UK, and we are delighted to have selected a team full of experienced athletes, and a number of talented individuals who have reached a GB and NI team for the first time.
‘The Championships are incredibly prestigious, and we have a great history in the event.
‘It is important to recognise the significance of the event in the pathway for our endurance athletes in the UK, so I look forward to seeing the athletes step up and achieve their goals at the Championships next month.’
