PHILADELPHIA – Rutgers track and field returned to action for the indoor season, competing at the Penn Select on Saturday, Jan. 11. The Scarlet Knights also sent a group of pole vaulters to the East Coast Pole Vault Convention hosted on the campus of Akron.
Chris Serrao and Brian O’Sullivan highlighted the performances for the weekend as the pair each set a school record in their respective events. Serrao ran a school record time of 7.71 to win the 60-meter hurdles at the Penn Select, while O’Sullivan cleared a height of 5.43m (17′ 9″) to claim the pole vault school record which stood since 2002 (Ed Keefe, 5.29m/17′ 4.5″).
“It was a strong opening weekend for us,” said Bobby Farrell. “It was great to get 2025 started. I’m proud of the way the team competed.”
In addition to the two school records, the Scarlet Knights posted 15 first-place finishes at the Penn meet.
On the track for the men, Rutgers earned wins in the 60, 200 and 400-meter events. James Bivins won the 60-meter with a time of 6.86, followed by Daniel Duncan in second in 6.87. Shamali Whittle won the 200-meter, running 21.23, while Joshua Babe and Bryce Tucker went first and second in the 400-meter. Babe ran a time of 48.65, followed by Tucker in 48.69.
Distance runners Gavin Richards, Brian Pedretti and Liam Tilton went 1-2-3 in the mile. Richards paced the group in 4:06.46 with Pedretti taking second in 4:09.39, followed by Tilton in 4:11.87.
Malachi Yehudah cleared 2.05m (6′ 8.75″) in fewer attempts to win the high jump, while Brian Butler finished third with the same height (2.05m/6′ 8.75″). All-American Sincere Robinson made his 2025 indoor debut, recording a leap of 7.44m (24′ 5″) to win the long jump. Bivins placed second with a distance of 7.16m (23′ 6″). Daniel Arana finished second in the triple jump, recording a jump of 15.03m (49′ 3.75″).
The women’s squad collected eight event wins, including a pair of victories from Azariah Grantham who finished first in both the 60 and 200-meter dash. Grantham ran 7.42 to finish first in the 60-meter, followed by Abby Love in second with a time of 7.62 and Jada Ellis in third in 7.71.
Grantham placed first in the 200-meter with a time of 24.05, while Cynthia Boakye took second in 24.32. Celine-Jada Brown also picked up a pair of wins on the afternoon. She finished first…
