Sprints shine at Hawkeye Invitational


IOWA CITY, Iowa – The UW men’s track and field team won five events at Saturday’s Hawkeye Invite. 

Elliott Harris won the 200 meters, Patrick Hilby won the 600 meters, Bryce Stachewicz won the 800 meters, Gio Wearing won the 60 hurdles and Hunter Cook won the pole vault in the meet that featured student-athletes from Iowa, UNI and Western Illinois. 

Harris led the way in the springs, claiming victory in the 200 meters with a time of 21.58. He also earned a fourth-place finish in the 60 meters with a time of 6.94 seconds. Landon Gallun set a personal record in the 60 meters, finishing in 6.95 seconds to take fifth.

Moving towards mid-distance, Bryce Stachewicz grabbed first place with a time of 1:52.40, moving up to 49th in the national rankings. His teammate, JJ Williams, finished fourth with a time of 1:53.70. Jalen Williams posted a PR in the 600 meters with a time of 1:19.55, while Patrick Hilby won the event with a personal best of 1:18.14, placing him ninth on the program’s all-time list.

Gio Wearing dominated the 60-meter hurdles, securing the win with a time of 7.84 seconds, which ranks 23rd nationally. He was joined in the hurdles finals by New York native Quinn Lansill, who finished eighth with a time of 8.34 seconds. 

The pole vault continues to be a highlight for the Badgers. Hunter Cook claimed first place with a height of 16-4 3/4 (5.00m), while Augusts Counard-Ciechanowski recorded a personal best of 16-0 3/4 (4.90m). Donovan Brady and Quinn Lansill contributed solid performances to round out the top-five. 

The Badger 4×400 relay team of Hilby, Williams, Harris, and Casey finished in second place with a time of 3:14.09.

Up Next: The Badgers will split up next weekend for meets in Illinois and New York, as UW will send athletes to the Fighting Illini Invite and the Dr. Sander Invitational.
